Sainte Marie is a favourite holiday destination, due to its sandy beaches , exuberant vegetation and spice gardens growing vanilla , cloves , and cinnamon. Once a haunt of pirates , the island offers diving and water sports and is a whale-watchers paradise as the humpback whales pass on their passge north to give birth and breed. (July to September).
